When you paint your home, you can choose standard or premium quality paints. The difference between them may not be obvious at first glance, but there are definite differences. Although you may save money on standard quality paints, you may need to paint more coats, use more primer, and it may not last as long. These are all factors to consider when you are choosing your paint.
How Is Premium Paint Different?
The main difference is in the ingredients that make up the paint. The three components to a can of paint are the pigment, the binders, and the solvents. These three elements combine to determine how well your paint job will hold up over time.
Pigment: The pigment is what gives color and coverage to paint, and the quality of the pigment will determine how many coats you need, as well as how the finished color looks on your walls. Most premium paints contain a pigment called titanium dioxide, which is smaller and more pure. It will allow the paint to get good coverage on each coat. Lower quality paints often use clay or silica, which creates a need for more coats to finish the paint job.
Binders: The binder is the element that holds the paint together. When you have paint with a higher quality binder, the paint will adhere to the surface better and last longer. Oil-based binders are derived from oil derivatives, such as soya oil or tung oil, whereas latex binders are used in water-based paints, and include acrylic, styrene acrylic, or vinyl acrylic. Premium paints often use 100% acrylic, as it is the strongest binder and most resistant to stains.
Solvents: The solvent is the liquid portion of paint, and it allows the solids (the pigments and the binders) to make it from the paint can to the surface you are painting. In latex paints, the solvent is most often water, but premium quality paints may only use 35% to 40% solvent, depending on the level of gloss of the paint. When there are more solids and a smaller ratio of solvents, more of the color will stick to the surface.
How Is Premium Paint Better?
Because premium paint is made up of higher quality ingredients, it will take less coats of paint and look better when the paint job is finished. The paint job will be more durable and last longer as well, so even though it costs more initially, the long-term impact is a reduced cost.
Painting is one of the most affordable ways to freshen up your home, so it makes sense to spend a little bit of extra money on premium paint. You should check the ingredients to make sure you are getting what you are paying for.
The solvency is sometimes called the volume of solids, and this percentage should be between 35% and 40%. You will use fewer coats of paint, the color will last longer, and the quality of the paint job will be higher.
